independent study taught me how to work without handrails. write the hypothesis, run the test, look at what actually happened.
2025 to 2026
i took everything i'd built to a city i didn't know yet and found out which parts of it were real.
Madrid was the stress test i didn't know i needed.
different city. different language. different institutional logic. same method, applied to everything.
what held up taught me what was real. what didn't showed me where i still had hidden assumptions.
the PB lesson scales exactly like that - when context gets harder, instruction quality matters more, not less.

this class made me translate technical logic into words people can actually use. if they can't run it, it isn't clear yet.
Health informatics sharpened something.
in most systems, a vague instruction produces a wrong output. in health systems, it can produce something that hurts someone.
that raised the standard for everything - not just in this domain, but in how i think about clarity as a form of responsibility.
i documented decisions sooner and checked edge cases earlier. fewer surprises, better handoffs.
working across institutions forced me to state assumptions out loud. what used to be implied had to be written.
mentoring stayed simple: name the next step, test it, adjust. people need clarity more than speeches.
same method. completely different context. here's what held.
i'd built a way of working entirely in one cultural and institutional context. moving to madrid meant none of those assumptions could be taken for granted anymore.
treat the whole semester as a test. document what transfers and what breaks.
the core method held. several assumptions i didn't know i was making didn't.
i'd name my assumptions explicitly before arriving somewhere new. the sandwich, applied to myself.
junior year tested what was invariant - what stays true when everything around it changes.
most of it held. the parts that didn't were the most instructive failures i've had.
that's still the method: run it somewhere hard. see what breaks. fix that part. run it again.
